2012 Cardboard Boat Provincial Championships

On Thursday, Feb 21 the Eden Flyers made the trip to the beautful city of Waterloo, Ontario for the Provinical Cardboard Competition. After arriving bright and early, your Eden Flyers put the pressure on and started to build. All three Eden teams dealt amazingly well with the added obstacle. They would have to cut away 8 squared feet of cardboard. Instead of using sheets 8 X 4, your Flyers had to use 8 X 3 sheets. Despite the added dilema, the teams handed in amazing designs. It was then time to build! After two hours of hard work it was time to put the boats to the test. Eden #2's paddler, Trevor Huizinga set a blazing pace of 12.45 seconds to finish first in the speed portion. But after some miscommunication between the remaining 3 members (Tess Hunter, Ashley Waugh, & Mackenzie Wiens) the boat was unable to hold any weight. In the next heat Eden #8 was commended on their heart. Even after their boat was totally sumberged; paddler Connor Jakobshuk swam it in to the end. Despite the great design, the boat was disqualified and Kara Emberson, Paige Schappert or Mikaela Reschke were unable to try and see if it could hold any weight. The last Eden team to hit the water was Eden #10 lead by Levi Pauls. He started off slow but picked it up and finished with a time of 14.35 seconds. But much like in the qualifers, they weren't done yet! Taylor Keracher hoped in to test how much weight it could hold. After 2.5 minutes had past, Leanne Lof climbed in... and sank it much to the dismay of final team member James Lagerwerf. But the team was satisfied with they 280 lbs weight held. At the end of the day, there were only 3 teams that held weight and all 3 teams were awarded with a medal. But Eden #10 came out on top of them all, claiming the gold medal. Congratulations also goes out to Eden #2 for finishing fourth overall and Eden #8 finished 17 overall out of 21 teams. Way to go team members!
